Saint-Estèphe Cos d'Estournel is the signature wine of this fascinating domaine, Second Cru Classé, located in the northern Médoc. Its original and exotic appearance is due to the imagination of its founder, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, a great traveler and lover of the Eastern world. This explains the pagoda roofs of the winery, which makes it unique within the architectural landscape of Bordeaux's Châteaus. A true wine palace, it makes use of a vineyard of absolute prestige and produces a range of excellent labels. The Château's first wine is a Bordeaux blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, elegant, intense and voluptuous, expressing the extraordinary aromatic richness of the grapes and the ancient savoir-faire in the cellar.
Saint-Estèphe Cos d'Estournel wine originates in an area of the Médoc, which can boast a privileged geographical situation. The origin of the name of the domaine Cos comes from a word, which in the Gascony language means hill of pebbles and perfectly describes the characteristic of the terroir. The soils are composed of alluvial gravels, which are very well drained and crossed by a vein of clay. Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in the higher, stony area of the domaine, while Merlot is best expressed in the lower, clay-rich area. The proximity of the Gironde estuary makes for a mild climate, warding off spring frosts and promoting excellent ripening during sunny summers. From the beginning, careful zoning of the property has been carried out, and each parcel is vinified separately to bring out its best characteristics. The estate covers an area of about 100 hectares. The average age of the vines is about 45 years, but there are also plots of 100-year-old plants, a heritage that is preserved with great care. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel truncated conical vats, and all operations in the cellar take place using gravity, so as not to stress the musts and wine with the use of pumps. The wine matures for a long time in French oak barrels and completes aging in the bottle.
The red Saint-Estèphe Cos d'Estournel is characterized by an extraordinary expressive harmony that seduces and conquers from the first sip. It is a wine that expresses all the charm of the terroir of Saint-Estèphe in its most refined version. In the glass it has a dark ruby red color with light garnet reflections. The bouquet gives elegant aromas of black currant, blueberry, wild blackberry, hints of soft spices, nuances of black tea and noble woods. The sip is deep and long, with rich aromas, velvety tannins and a lingering finish with great flavor balance. A great red destined for long aging.
